24 hour race III
Saturday 23 september 2006
- 12.00 report to the officials at the START in Utrecht (address follows)
- 13.00 Start the ‘Tour of all tours’
- After leaving Utrecht the route visits checkpoints in the following cities : Amsterdam, Zwolle, Arnhem, Nijmegen, Eindhoven and finish in Maastricht.
Enough food will be available at every checkpoint. Make sure however that you have food with you and most important enough to drink - either that you have brought yourself, or that you have picked up along the way. Remember, there are sections of more than 100 km where there are no checkpoints - the distance between Amsterdam and Zwolle is 113 km!
- The addresses of the checkpoints will be announced shortly. It is of course advisable to study the route between these before you start the race.
- There will be a support vehicle following which you can call in case of emergency. If you happen to become stranded between cities with a broken frame, then call the bus - not that you will be offered a new bike, but you will be picked up and taken to the next checkpoint. And if you become stranded at one of the checkpoints and cannot go on, a place to sleep will be arranged for you.
- If you give up on the way and decide to find your own bed - in Arnhem or wherever, call the support vehicle so that the race administration knows where you are!
- You will receive a list of telephone numbers with all the checkpoints and the most important of all - that of the support vehicle - which is the first number to call should anything go wrong.
- At the start you will also receive copies of street maps for the cities you will visit marked with the addresses of the checkpoints. You should bring your own national maps for the route between the cities.
- You can have your extra luggage transported from Utrecht to Maastricht (your sleeping bag and fresh clothes for example.)
- In each city you will receive proof that you have visited that checkpoint. Show this when you arrive in Maastricht. Your cycle computer will also be checked in Maastricht.
Registration
- Please register on time. This closes two weeks in advance of the race. Remember to register two telephone numbers : your own and that of the person who should be informed in the event that God forbid something serious happens.
Safety
- it is advisable not to ride alone since if something goes wrong you can rely on the support of others.
- wear a helmet.
- eat and drink enough during the journey.
- check the weather and wear appropriate clothes. Remember that we will be riding at night and that it can get chilly just before sunrise.
- Take your mobile telephone and keep it on so that you can be contacted if necessary.
- Red rear light and a good front light. Flashing LED’s are no good at the front so think torch. You will be riding in the dark along unlit roads. You may encounter banks of thick fog and you really don’t want an oncoming scooter not to able to see you coming.
- Officials in the support vehicle or at the checkpoints will determine whether you are in a fit condition to continue. Sometimes participants are in no condition to make this decision for themselves. Perhaps you have failed to keep up with the time schedule, maybe it is just obvious that you are physically unable to continue safely on the journey.
Rules and responsibilities
Although the race administration is not responsible and you ride entirely at your own risk, following these rules will make for a smooth safe and fair journey:
- You will not be allowed to start without a helmet.
- Your bike will be checked for a red rear light and a ‘good’ (see above) white front lamp.
- Your cycle computer will be checked and set to zero.
- Ensure that you register at every checkpoint and that you receive proof of arrival. Whether or not you really have visited all the cities will be rigorously investigated when you get to Maastricht.
